MAGICAL REALISM IN ACTION

the royal spanish academy is making the executive decision to simplify spanish by eliminating two letters from the language. 450 million people speak spanish, hella most of which do not live in spain, or use the f*ing antiquated-ass vosotros they insist on using. anyway.

“It’s kind of a magic realist moment. They decide that 2 of 29 letters will disappear,” said Ilan Stavans, a Mexican who is a professor of Latin American and Latino culture at Amherst College. “All the dictionaries will have to be remade, which is good for selling the Royal Academy’s dictionary, which they keep producing as though it’s the Bible.”

i’m not trying to hate necessarily— some of my best friends are spanish—but can we stop deluding ourselves into thinking imperialism isn’t still thriving in our globalized 21st century age? who said *you* still get to make the rules? language is the backbone of culture, and this kinda shit is like a spinal tap ya just don’t need.

anyway, which magical realist author would have written this into a storyline? my bet is bolaño.

thanks to my girl la pajarita for hipping me!
